Boost Your Immune System to Curb Eczema Flare-Ups

According to the National Institutes of Health, eczema afflicts 15 million people in the United States. The first signs of eczema are usually seen in infants, and it's said that 10%-20% of all infants will experience some form of eczema. The good news is that almost half of these children's disease will greatly improve by the time they are between 5 and 15 years of age. Unfortunately, others will have some form of eczema all throughout their lives.

Doctors are unsure of it's cause, but this condition seems to be an abnormal reaction of the body's immune system, the system that regulates the body by helping it to protect and recover from various infections and diseases.

In order to have a healthy immune system, it's important that you reduce the stress in your life, exercise regularly and eat a well-balanced diet that includes a variety of healthy foods that are known to improve the effectiveness of your body's protective system.

Free radicals deteriorate healthy cells by causing cell mutations (alterations) that lead to serious illnesses. Antioxidants, properties found in food, are a natural weapon to destroy free radicals.

A high nutrient diet includes:
*Antioxidants (rich in vitamins A, C, E, and lycopene) found in pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, grapefruit (red & pink), blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, peppers (red & green), tomatoes, broccoli, sunflower seeds, almonds and olive oil
*Omega 3 Fatty Acids found in ground flax seeds, walnuts, salmon, soybeans and pumpkin seeds
*Folate found in dark green leafy vegetables (turnip greens, mustard greens, spinach, romaine lettuce, collard greens, etc.), beans, legumes, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, beets and okra

Excess fat restricts the body's ability to fight off bacteria and free radicals. A diet that is low in fat, refined sugar and oil is key to a strong immune system.

There isn't a cure for eczema yet, but having a strong immune system will enable you to fight this skin condition from within - controlling the eczema and not allowing it to control your life.

  1. You're right. I need to be more aware of how my immune system is doing and not just during cold and flu season but everyday.

  2. One thing you forgot to mention was that making sure that you get enough sleep is also VERY important to having a healthy immune system. Most people need between 8-10 hours each night.
